Your first time at a self-service laundromat in Singapore: what you actually need to know
A plain guide for first-timers. What to bring, what to do, and the mistakes that catch most people out.
8 min read

Most people who walk into a self-service laundromat for the first time have the same experience: they figure it out eventually, but not before a few moments of quiet confusion. Which machine size? How much to load? Do I add detergent? How long will this actually take?
This guide answers all of it, so your first visit goes smoothly.
What should I bring to a self-service laundromat?
Less than you think.
You need:
Your laundry (sorted before you leave — more on that below)
A laundry bag or two — one for darks, one for lights if you're washing both
Payment — at Hangout Laundry, that means PayNow, cash (in $2, $5, or $10 notes), or the Huebsch app. No coins required. See the full payment guide →
Something to do while you wait — a book, your laptop, earphones, a show downloaded for offline. More on this later.
Leave at home:
Your own detergent. This is the most common first-timer mistake. At Hangout Laundry, detergent and softener are automatically dosed directly into the machine as part of every wash cycle. If you add your own on top of that, your clothes will be over-soaped and won't come out properly clean. Trust the machine. The dosing is calibrated.
Coins. You don't need them here.
How do I sort my laundry before going to a self-service laundromat?
Sorting before you leave saves time and protects your clothes. You may like to put them into washing bags. At a laundromat, sorting at the machine while others are waiting is stressful. Do it at home.
The basics:
Darks with darks, lights with lights — dark clothes (blacks, navies, dark greys) should wash separately from whites and pale colours. New dark garments especially can bleed dye in the first few washes.
Towels and bedsheets separately from clothes — towels and bedding are heavy, hold water differently, and generate a lot of lint. They wash and dry better on their own.
Check care labels — anything labelled "Dry Clean Only" should not go into a self-service washing machine. For items labelled "Hand Wash Only" or "Delicate", use the delicate cycle. When in doubt on a delicate item, it may be worth sending for professional drop-off laundering rather than risking it in a machine.
If you're washing a mix of everyday cotton and synthetics together, that's generally fine. The main thing to protect against is colour bleeding and delicate items getting damaged by heavier fabrics.
How do I choose the right machine size at a self-service laundromat?
At Hangout Laundry, machines come in only two capacities: 16kg Medium and 20kg Large.
Here's how to choose:
Everyday clothes for 2–3 people - 16kg
A full week's family laundry - 16kg
Duvets, curtains, bulky bedding - 20kg
A king-size duvet or very large items - 20kg
The most important rule: do not overfill. This is the single most common mistake among first-time users. A tightly packed drum doesn't allow clothes to move freely, which means the water and detergent can't circulate properly. The result is laundry that's technically been through a wash cycle but isn't actually clean.
The drum should be about three-quarters full at most. Clothes should have room to tumble. If you're pressing things down to fit more in, you've gone too far. Split it into two loads.
When in doubt, go up a machine size. A load that has room to move will come out cleaner.
What wash cycle should I use at a self-service laundromat?
Most self-service laundromats, including Hangout Landry, offer a straightforward set of cycle options. You don't need to overthink this.
For most everyday loads — cotton, linen, mixed fabrics, towels, school uniforms — the standard normal wash cycle is fine. It handles everyday dirt and body oils reliably.
For delicates, curtains or anything with a "gentle" care label — choose the delicate cycle. Lower agitation protect fine fibres.
For bulky items like duvets and bedsheets — the standard cycle on a larger machine works well. YOu can choose a hot wash if they have not been washed recently.
On water temperature: Ambient water is gentler on fabrics and prevents shrinkage and colour fading. Warm water removes body oils and heavier dirt more effectively.
What should I never put in a self-service laundromat machine?
A few things that commonly cause damage or aren't appropriate for commercial machines:
"Dry clean only" garments — wool coats, silk, structured blazers, cashmere. Water and agitation will damage these. See the full dry cleaning guide →
Garments with excessive embellishments, beading, or sequins — the agitation can pull these off or damage surrounding fabric
Heavily soiled items with sharp debris (sand, gravel, construction dust) — shake these out thoroughly first or wash by hand, to protect the drum
Shoes — rubber-soled shoes can damage the drum on a fast spin cycle. Most shoes are better wiped down or hand-washed
Rubber-backed bath mats or items with rubber lining — the heat and agitation can cause rubber to break down and leave residue in the machine
As there isn't any multi-used washer and dryer at Hangout Laundry, we do not allow customers to load in mats, rugs, shoes and pet-related items.
Can I use my own detergent at a self-service laundromat?
At some self-service laundromats in Singapore, yes. But not at Hangout Laundry, for a specific reason.
Our machines automatically dose the correct amount of detergent and softener directly into the drum as part of every cycle. It's already built in. Adding your own detergent on top creates excess suds, which the machine is not designed for. Clothes that go through a over-soaped cycle tend to come out with detergent residue on them, not properly rinsed.
This surprises many first-timers. The short version: the detergent is already handled. Don't bring your own.
How do I know if the laundromat machines are clean?
At Hangout Laundry, machines are cleaned daily and disinfected on a weekly schedule.
The folding area is also maintained as a clean surface. It's worth using as folding straight from the dryer means fewer creases and less ironing later.
If you ever notice a machine that looks or smells like it needs attention, flag it with staff. At Hangout Laundry, counter service is available Mon–Fri 3pm–8pm and weekends 12pm–6pm. Outside those hours, WhatsApp is available from 10am to 10pm.
How does payment work at a self-service laundromat in Singapore?
At Hangout Laundry, you don't need coins.
Machines run on tokens (1 token = $1), which you purchase at the on-site token changers using PayNow or cash. Alternatively, you can skip tokens entirely and pay directly through the Huebsch app using a credit or debit card, Google Pay, or Apple Pay.
The app is worth setting up before your first visit — not just for payment, but for what it lets you do during your visit. Full app guide here →
What does the Huebsch app actually do, and do I need it?
You don't strictly need it as tokens work fine. But the app meaningfully improves the experience, and most regulars prefer it.
The thing most new customers don't expect: when a cycle says "42 minutes," that isn't always exactly what you'll get. Water pressure at the point of use affects cycle timing, and machines may run slightly shorter or longer than the display suggests. The app tracks your cycle in real time, so you're not guessing.
What the app does:
Check machine availability before you leave home — see in real time which machines are free at Hangout Laundry. Time your trip so you walk in and load straight away, instead of arriving to find everything taken.
Start and pay for machines from your phone — no tokens required.
Monitor your cycle remotely — you don't have to sit and watch the drum. Step out, run some errands. The app tells you where you are in the cycle.
Get notified when your laundry is done — turn on notifications and you'll know the moment the laundry is done.
Top-up credits with a bonus — top up $50 or more and receive 10% additional credits automatically.
Download the Huebsch app on the App Store or Google Play. When prompted for a location, enter pin 531706 to connect to Hangout Laundry.
How long does a laundromat wash and dry cycle take?
At Hangout Laundry:
Wash cycle: approximately 30 to 42 minutes depending on the cycle you choose
Dry cycle: approximately 30 to 50 minutes depending on your load size.
Total time for a wash-and-dry: minimally 60 minutes.
This is considerably faster than running the same load through a typical home dryer, which often takes 90 minutes to two hours and may still leave heavier fabrics slightly damp.
Plan for about an hour and a half from arrival to finished. Which brings us to the next point.
What should I do while waiting for my laundry at a self-service laundromat?
This is worth thinking about before you go, because an hour is genuinely useful time if you use it intentionally and wasted time if you don't.
The advice from our own experience: come prepared to stack your habits.
A laundromat visit isn't just laundry. It's a built-in window of time where you're already sitting down, away from home distractions, with a fixed end point. That's actually a good environment for focused work, a podcast episode, a book chapter, clearing emails, or even a video call.
At Hangout Laundry specifically, the space is air-conditioned, has free WiFi, comfortable seating, and table space to open a laptop. There's also specialty coffee, matcha latte, and drinking chocolate available from the self-service machine. The idea is that laundry time should feel rewarding, not wasted.
If you arrive thinking "I'll just scroll for an hour," you'll leave feeling like you've lost time. If you arrive with your laptop or a book, you'll leave feeling like you got two things done at once.
Quick-reference checklist for your first laundromat visit
Before you leave home:
Sort laundry into darks / lights / bedding.
Check care labels. Remove anything dry-clean-only.
Download the Huebsch app and enter pin 531706 (optional but useful).
Check real-time machine availability on the app.
Bring something to do; a book, laptop, earphones.
At the laundromat:
Choose your machine size (don't overfill — ¾ full at most).
Load your laundry, select your cycle.
Pay via token changer (PayNow or cash) or the Huebsch app directly.
Do NOT add your own detergent. It's free with each cycle.
Start your timer or enable cycle notifications on the app.
Use the time to settle in with a coffee and get something done.
After the wash:
Transfer to the dryer promptly. Don't leave laundry sitting in the drum. Check that all articles have been removed.
Fold at the folding station while still warm. It makes a real difference to creases.
Again, check the dryer drum before you leave. It's easy to leave a sock or pillowcase behind.
