A real day out in Bedok: what tourists actually miss (and locals love)
6/24/20265 min read

Most tourists exploring eastern Singapore do not make it past Joo Chiat or East Coast. They come for the famous hawker stalls, eat well, and leave without realising there is an entire overshadowed neighbourhood aka Bedok that is well-loved by locals.
This is a guide to spending a proper day in Bedok like a local.
Start the Day: Bedok 538 Market and Food Centre (538 Bedok North Street 3, Singapore 460538)
Most visitors head to Bedok Interchange Hawker Centre or Bedok 85. Both are good. But Bedok 538 right in the heart of Bedok North is where the neighbourhood actually eats breakfast.
Built in 1979, the hawker centre at Block 538 Bedok North Street 3 has over 40 cooked food stalls and is one of the popular hawker centres in the Bedok area.
A few stalls worth knowing:
Ah Kiat Wanton Mee (#01-92) — Ah Kiat took over the stall from his godmother, who had been running it at the same location for years. He rises at 2am to roast the char siew and prepare ingredients, opens at 6am, then returns for the lunch crowd. The chewy noodles, plump dumplings (done in two different styles) and homemade chilli sauce are the reason people queue.
Lim Kopi (#01-85) — A kaya toast, soft-boiled eggs, and coffee set for under $3. If you want something more, they also do egg mayo and cheese sandwiches. Old-school Singapore breakfast, no frills.
Super Shiok Nasi Lemak (#01-115) — Fluffy basmati rice meets spicy sambal overloaded with ikan bilis. What's not to love? Fresh and hot sides like crispy chicken wings, otah, omelette are consistently topped up. The dry mee siam is a standout too.
Ah Koon Fish Soup (#01-120 & 121) — This well-loved stall take up two units. On one side, you can order generously portioned, thick-cut sliced batang fish in a umami soup base. On the other side, the same sliced fish can be donw stir fry white bee hoon style. Craving for more dishes? The stall also stir fries fish head, sambal potato leaves, leather jacket too. Service is fast and efficient.
Mid-Morning: Bedok Reservoir Park (Bedok Reservoir Road, Singapore)
A 10-minute drive or a walk across the bridge near the park connector at Bedok North brings you to one of Singapore's most underrated parks. What can you do here?
Walking and jogging — the reservoir loop is a proper circuit, popular with morning runners and families. Flat, shaded in sections, views across the water. Good if you want to move after a heavy hawker breakfast.
Passion Wave — water sports rentals and activities at the reservoir, operated by People's Association. Kayaking, dragon boating, and other water activities are available. Check the Passion Wave site for opening hours, current programmes and booking. Suitable for beginners.
Forest Adventure — Singapore's only treetop adventure course, set in the forest on the banks of Bedok Reservoir. The Grand Course has 44 obstacles including 3 giant zip lines. There is also a Junior Course and a Kids Course for younger participants. Courses are unguided once you are up in the trees, though a thorough safety briefing and continuous safety line system means you are attached at all times. Book in advance on weekends. Check forestadventure.com.sg for current prices and availability before you go.
If you are travelling with kids, the reservoir park alone can fill half a day.
Lunch: Tombok Tombok (670 Bedok North Street 3, #01-02, Kaki Bukit Community Club, Singapore 469627)
Finding a Peranakan restaurant inside a community centre is not something you expect. Finding a genuinely good one is even less expected.
Tombok Tombok at Kaki Bukit Community Club is quite the hidden gem. The Chicken Ngoh Hiang and the Nonya Chap Chye (braised mixed vegetables) draws comparisons to proper home cooking.
For lunch, go for the Perankan sets that start from $13.70 onwards. Each set come with a substantial main (usually a protein) plus two sides of your choice. For dinner, go bigger: the Ayam Buah Keluak fried rice, Itek Sioh (braised duck), Prawn Kerabu and Nonya Chendol for dessert.
It is Halal certified, with air-conditioned counter service and tables suited for families sharing big spreads. The space is large, which makes it a good option for groups. It has glass windows facing the main road, with entrances through the community centre compound.
The location is somewhat off the usual tourist trail. You need to take a short bus ride (bus 137) from Bedok North MRT along the Downtown Line. All part of the local appeal!
Closed on Mondays. Tuesday to Friday 11am to 9.30pm; Saturday & Sunday 10.30am to 9.30pm.
Afternoon: City Sprouts Bedok (200 Bedok North Avenue 1, Singapore 469752)
City Sprouts Bedok is a community and culture hub. It includes a Community Cat Garden with structured volunteering opportunities, a Community Makers' Lab run by VIVITA Singapore (a non-profit focused on STEM skills for youth), and free futsal court access every Wednesday and Friday between 3-5pm.
There is also padel here. Play! Padel operates a sheltered court at City Sprouts Bedok with one doubles court and one mini court, suitable for beginners and regulars. Advance booking is recommended. Check playpadel.sg for current schedules and rates.
This is a good place to spend an hour or two, especially if you are travelling with younger people or are curious about what community infrastructure looks like in a Singapore housing estate. It is unpretentious, genuinely community-run, and not on most tourist itineraries.
Do your laundry at Hangout Laundry, 531 Bedok North Street 3, #01-706
If you have been travelling for a few days and the laundry situation is getting out of hand, Bedok North is actually a convenient place to deal with it.

End the Night: Parvifolia (510 Bedok North Street 3, #01-75, Singapore 460510)
A 10-mins walk from Hangout Laundry is Muslim-friendly Parvifolia — a late-night dessert stop that locals in Bedok North treat as their neighbourhood's open secret.
The ice cream is floral-inspired, with 18 flavours that change seasonally priced from $5.20 for a single scoop, with premium flavours at an additional $1. Current flavours include Oolong Lychee and Spiced Strawberries alongside rotating options. The Nian Gao Waffle is worth the calories with its crispy edges and chewy centre. It pairs well with two scoops.
The interior is warm and inviting. It is the kind of place that is easy to stay in longer than you planned, especially on warm Singapore evenings.
Monday to Thusday, 12pm to 12.30am; Friday to Saturday, 12pm to 2am; Sunday 12pm to 1.30am.
Getting Around Bedok North

Nearest MRT: Bedok North (Downtown Line, DT1). A short bus ride (on 137) or taxi ride from there brings you into Bedok North Street 3.
From Changi Airport: approximately 15 minutes by car, 25 minutes by public transport.
